Error Analysis of Boundary Conditions Using Volume Penalization in Acoustic Simulations

Abstract:
In a previous contribution, a volume penalization approach was presented that enables time-domain acoustic simulations for complex geometries and supports the modeling of acoustically damping elements. In this method, objects are modeled as porous materials by using a reduced volume and additional friction terms. This paper investigates the numerical modeling error of this methodology. Specifically, it analyzes the modeling of solid walls and the sound reflection at these walls. The goal is to achieve a realistic approximation of the behavior for acoustic simulations through the optimal selection of modeling parameters, thereby providing insights into the physics and functioning of the respective configurations to identify further optimization opportunities.
