Improvements to a Multi-Modal Playback Device for Violin Sounds

Abstract:
Previous studies have shown that the intensity of vibrations at the neck of violins can affect the players' perception for certain characteristics of the instrument. A current research project aims to further investigate this phenomenon by examining the spectral influences on various perceptual attributes. To this end, a multi-modal playback device was developed that is capable of reproducing both the sound and the vibrations of violins while controlling and modifying them independently. Ultimately, this specialized instrument will be used in playback as well as in interactive playing scenarios. The present study explores potential enhancements to an existing prototype of such an instrument. In particular, the number of necessary actuators and their optimal positioning are discussed.
