Abstract:
DIN 4109 is the most relevant standard for building acoustics in Germany. From the early days in 1944 the DIN 4109 “Richtlinie für den Schallschutz im Hochbau“ (Guideline for sound insulation in buildings) has taken on the task of defining the requirements for sound insulation in buildings, which was set by the state in the course of building regulations. The development of the sound insulation requirements formulated in DIN 4109 for multi-storey residential buildings will be presented here and compared with the development in selected other European countries for some decades. Furthermore, a currently critical discussed development of the requirements (e.g. building type E) will be addressed with regards to the reduction in construction costs demanded by many parties, the ecological challenges in the construction industry, and the comfort expected by residents.
