Abstract:

In recent years, the usage and applications of fluidic oscillators has grown across domains such as flow mixing, cooling enhancement, and active flow control for drag reduction, due to their ability to generate consistent flow patterns, ease of production, and minimal maintenance. Additionally, owing to their aero-acoustic emissions, these devices hold potential for application in the field of NDT as air-coupled ultrasonic actuators. However, research on their applicability to NDT-CE remains limited. This study investigates the potential for ultrasonic chirps emitted by fluidic oscillators, with varying scales of aspect ratio and geometry, to be employed in NDT-CE. Chirps were generated by modulating the pressure input to the oscillators using fast response proportional valves and were analysed for their frequency content and amplitude. Initial tests were conducted on specimens of different material compositions to assess the signal behaviour and material characterisation capabilities. A hybrid setup – combining non-contact and contact sensors - was employed to capture the changes in the signals’ characteristics both at the inception and post-traversal through test specimen. The findings from this study shall offer insight into the acoustic behaviour of fluidic oscillators upon interaction with specimen which may enable improved design and control of such devices in future applications.
