Abstract:
Employees in the trade sector are affected by different mental load factors. Noise is one of them. During an extensive evaluation of the mental and physical load in a previous project, the project team discovered a thorough use of headsets in retail trade. To examine the mental stress and noise exposure of the use of headsets in trade sector, an additional project has been scheduled. However, the capturing of the noise exposure needed a special solution since the measurements needed to be conducted during the day-to-day business in trade sector on site. Therefore, a measurement apparatus was designed, built, evaluated, and improved. This contribution presents ‘Vincent’ – a measurement apparatus to examine the exposure to noise of wearing headsets during a work shift in retail trade. Vincent is a soundproof, handy box with one ear-simulator and the possibility to measure the sound pressure level close to the ear. The measurement procedure will be presented as well as the development process and the suitability of adhesive textile tape as improvement for the sound insulation. The measurements with the new apparatus are imminent.
