Directional Alignment of Binaural and Loudspeaker Playback Systems Using a QR Code

Abstract:
Devices for Augmented Audio (AA) and Augmented Reality (AR) commonly use headphones, allowing 3D audio playback via binaural signals rendered on the AA/AR device. In setups where loudspeakers are employed for 3D audio playback, they are typically connected to an audio workstation responsible for rendering the audio. When combining both playback systems — headphones and loudspeakers — the coordinate systems of each must be aligned for consistent audio directionality. Our solution utilizes a QR code label, whose physical position is recognized by the AR device’s camera. This provides a robust setup process that ensures coincident directional playback across both the headphone and loudspeaker systems.
