The validity date of German type approval certificates

Abstract:
In Germany, if a sound level meter or sound calibrator is used in commercial or official transactions or for measurements which are performed in the public interest, it must be periodically calibrated at one of the German legal calibration offices which requires a type approval certificate. German type approval testing is performed by Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) according to German law. With the current German Measures and Verification Act and the Measures and Verification Ordinance (Mess- und Eichgesetz and Mess- und Eichverordnung), which came fully into force 2015, type approval certificates have a limited validity period of 10 years. Former certificates according to the old version of the law had an unlimited validity which was retroactively limited with the introduction of the new law until end of 2024. This means validity of some certificates expired to the begin of the year 2025. The poster shall provide the opportunity for questions and discussions and spots on questions like: What does the validity period mean for the user? What does it mean for the manufacturer? Which are the formal and technical requirements to extend the validity period?
