NS 8178:2023 Acoustic quality criteria for spaces for music performance – why and how

Abstract:
Standard Norway published a new standard for music performance rooms in 2023, the NS 8178:2023 «Acoustic quality criteria for spaces for music performance». The standard describes criteria for rooms and halls used for music performances in venues of less than 6500 m3, and is a supplement to the ISO 23591:2021 on music rehearsal rooms, «Acoustic quality criteria for music rehearsal rooms and spaces». The new standard focuses on the volume and numbers of performers and seats, room dimensions, acoustic parameters such as reveberation time and sound strength. The background noise has criteria for building service equipment and for other technical installations normally used in music performance rooms. There are separeate chapters on stage area and audience area, and AAS systems are treated in the chapter for variable acoustics.The presentation will explain the main framework and principles in the standard, the music genres (quiet acoustic music, loud acoustic music and amplified music) and ensemble types and sizes included in the standard. The presentation will also explain the link between the performance room standard and ISO 23591:2021 standard on music rehearsal rooms, and will also discuss the criteria for multi-purpose rooms.
