Neighbour noise questions in national surveys

Abstract:
National surveys on residential satisfaction aims to measure the impact of built environment on residents’ health and wellbeing. These surveys typically aim to cover a wide range of environmental factors; thus, noise occupies only a small part in these surveys through a few questions dedicated to “noise in general” or “traffic noise”. This makes it difficult to measure the neighbour noise impacts on residents and develop useful insights for sound insulation policies. Socio-acoustic surveys focusing on neighbour noise are usually found in individual research although the sample size and representativeness of the population is arguable.Nevertheless, neighbour noise exists in national survey schemes of some European countries which can be considered as good examples. This study analyses the noise questions found in selected countries (for example Denmark, Norway, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, UK) and makes a comparative analysis. The results address some recommendations on questions to address neighbour noise in national surveys.
