Use of substitute immission locations for the measurement of shooting noise

Abstract:
In Germany, VDI 3745 Sheet 1 is used for acceptance measurements of shooting ranges. For typical immission distances over 100 m, the standard requires that at least three independent measurements, each with at least 10 shots per emission situation be measured under favourable propagation conditions due to the effects of weather on the immission levels. However, this can lead to measurements taking a long time at immission locations where favourable propagation conditions only rarely occur. The use of substitute immission locations can lead to an accelerated procedure and also reduce the effort required from three independent measurements to one measurement. Furthermore, problems caused by extraneous noise or low imission levels at the actual place of immission can be reduced. However, VDI 3745 Sheet 1 does not provide a method with substitute immission locations, as this can lead to erroneous results in the case of shooting noise. Following an initial measurement in 2022, a further measurement campaign was started in 2024 to further develop and validate the method of using substitute immission locations for shooting noise. This publication presents the concept of the substitute measurement method as well as the previous results of the measurements.
